Tension between China and Taiwan: Taipei detected 42 planes and 31 ships on the first day of Beijing maneuvers

In the last hours, they registered new Chinese military maneuvers around Taiwanwhich led the second mentioned to deploy its Army to be alert for any possible decision made by the country led by Xi Jinping.

According to what the authorities indicated, on the first day of these procedures carried out by Beijing, 42 Chinese planes and 31 ships were detected around the island and its peripheral archipelagos. The explanations provided by China indicate that the action is taken to “punish” the “separatist acts related to the independence” of Taiwan.

The Ministry of National Defense (MDN) of Taiwan pointed out that 28 of the planes crossed the Taiwan Strait line, which appears as an unofficial border that was respected by both Beijing and Taipei for decades. This represents the highest figure so far in 2024.

Furthermore, they indicated that 15 Navy vessels and 16 Chinese Coast Guard vessels were detected in the surroundings of the country, in addition to the Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu and Dongyn islands, a series of archipelagos that are under Taiwanese control and that are located a few kilometers from China.

The Command of Eastern Theater of Operations of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China announced the start of military exercises near Taiwan starting at 7:45 this morning (23:45 GMT on Wednesday), as “strong punishment” for Taiwan’s “separatist acts related to independence”.

China qualified the maneuvers as “completely legitimate and necessary”, and noted that they are “in line with international law and practice.”

For their part, both the Government and Taiwan’s two main opposition parties expressed their condemnation of these movements on Thursday.

In this line, The Foreign Ministry reiterated that Taiwan “will continue to defend its belief in democracy” and will not change “due to coercion” of Chinawhich considers the island, governed autonomously since 1949, as a “rebellious province.”
