The focus is on Taiwan and the possible direct conflict with China, after Xi Jinping’s government has increased its military presence on the island with fighter jets and missiles. “If China has shown anything in recent months, it is that it perfectly masters the management of the escalation without causing a fire in the area,” says Juan Antonio Aguilar, director of the Spanish Institute of Geopolitics. Taiwan’s new president, Lai Ching-te, “is being reckless” because he knows that the international community recognizes Taiwan as part of “one China,” including the waters between the island and the mainland. “Taiwan is not aware or does not want to be aware that it is part of China,” Aguilar reiterates. Taiwan is where it is because it has the support of the US.
How far will these maneuvers go? “A political response both internally in China and in the international community,” defends Emiliano García Coso, International Dean of CEISA. “They want to hit the table,” because any type of invasion would have a high cost. “China is not going to give up its claim to sovereignty over Taiwan to anyone.”
China is considering the scenario of Taiwan’s future, “like that ripe fruit that has to fall,” reiterates Eduardo Irastorza, OBS Business School professor. The US is playing a withdrawal strategy. But, China “plays at home” and can develop maneuvers because the waters are its, activating the US radar.
