MADRID, May 25. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Chilean Police arrested this Friday a firefighter accused of having started the fire that took place at the beginning of February in the Valparaíso region and left more than 130 dead and around 16,000 injured.

The author of the accident that on February 2 affected the communes of Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Quilpué and Villa Alemana, a 22-year-old young man, had been collaborating as a volunteer with the 13th Fire Company of Valparaíso for a year and a half, according to the newspaper ‘La Nación’.

In a statement collected by the Chilean news agency Aton, the Investigative Police (PDI) has reported the operation that found the whereabouts of the person responsible for the incident, thanks to the work of the Investigative Brigade of Crimes Against the Environment and Cultural Heritage of Valparaíso .

“We are completely devastated by what happened. It is a completely isolated event and we want to clarify it as soon as possible. We have been serving Valparaíso for more than 170 years and we cannot allow ourselves to have this type of situation. We are going to make all the information available to whoever it may concern. that we can have in order to clarify this situation,” declared the commander of the Valparaíso Fire Company, Vicente Maggiolo.

For her part, the Chilean Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Carolina Tohá, has supported the work of the firefighters. “It is a fundamental institution in fighting fires. We cannot allow a case like this to tarnish the function it carries out and the recognition it has in Chilean society,” she declared at a press conference.

The minister has assured that the investigation is still ongoing and that she will report on any new elements that emerge. Likewise, he has insisted that work will be done with the institution to try to understand why one of its members acted in this way and clarify if there is any type of pattern, but “always taking care not to stain or weaken the function that the institution has (…). It would be good if we did not question the vocation, the seriousness or the commitment” with which they work every day.
