This will be the closing of Claudia Sheinbaum’s campaign | Mexican elections 2024

Claudia Sheinbaum, Morena’s presidential candidate, has chosen the country’s main public square to end three months of arduous presidential campaign. The former head of Government faces the final stretch of the elections with a wide advantage over Xóchitl Gálvez, a condition that she has played in her favor, leaving aside the direct attacks of the opponent. In his most recent rallies and public appearances, Sheinbaum has called on his followers to “vote all Morena,” especially with regard to Mexico City, the largest bastion of the left in the country, where the advantage of the morenista Clara Brugada over Santiago Taboada has been reduced from 16 to 11 points a few days before the elections, according to the latest Enkoll survey for EL PAÍS and W Radio.

Claudia Sheinbaum’s campaign closing time

After appearing for the last time in León (Guanajuato) and Guadalajara (Jalisco), two of the main strongholds of both the PAN and the Citizen Movement, respectively, Claudia Sheinbaum will close her campaign in the Zócalo of Mexico City on Wednesday, May 29 at 4:00 p.m.

This is the last day stipulated by the electoral authority to carry out official campaign events. From then on, from the first minute of Thursday the 30th until the end of election day, the closed period will take place, a period that, according to the INE, is key for “citizens’ reflection and assessment of the proposals” and demands silence from political parties and government institutions. Radio, television spots and public events are also prohibited.

What do the polls say before the campaign closes?

According to the latest Enkoll survey for EL PAÍS and W Radio, Claudia Sheinbaum will close her campaign with more than 20 points of effective preference over Xóchitl Gálvez, an advantage that a priori seems insurmountable a few days before election day. The distance between the official candidate and the opposition standard-bearer has been a constant since the beginning of the campaign. Although Xóchitl Gálvez has dedicated a good part of his interventions in the three presidential debates to launching attacks and direct questions about his opponent and the party he represents, Sheinbaum has maintained the tone and emerged unscathed from the face-to-face meetings based on a strategy based in avoiding the accusations and recognizing herself as a winner. Less than a week before the elections, Enkoll’s poll places him with 56% effective vote preference, compared to 33% for Xóchitl Gálvez and 11% for the Citizen Movement candidate, Jorge Álvarez Máynez.

Since her registration as a pre-candidate, in November 2023, Sheinbaum has referred to her political platform as “the second floor of the Fourth Transformation”, a link that seeks to connect with the broad popular base that brought Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the presidency. with just over 30 million votes. The official candidate has also emphasized her plan to extrapolate policies implemented during her mandate in Mexico City in terms of security and transportation to the entire country.
