Last Friday, May 31, the Andina agency revealed that Nadia Sánchez Gómez, president of the She Is foundation, announced the selection of five Peruvian girls from a total of 1,651 registered, from 16 departments of Peru, to be part of the Ella program. He is an astronaut.

Who are the five winning girls of the Ella es Astronauta program?

These five Peruvian students winners of the third space crew are Anning Shelly Sofía Chambi Huamanlazo, Claudia Natalia Panta Hurtado, Mahdithly Ruth Johssi Tarazona Trujillo, Yanet Melinda Bañez Rojas and Angela Dayana Poma Cerpa, who will represent Peru in this edition of the program. All of them were chosen for their well-deserved effort, perseverance and passion during the five-month selection process for the third NASA crew. These great girls received the news with great enthusiasm, because being chosen among so many applicants is a new achievement.

What is the She is an Astronaut program?

Ella es Astronauta is a program, started in Colombia, in 2019, that seeks to train girls between 11 and 16 years old with limited resources, passionate about science, technology, art, engineering and mathematics, to become agents of change. and manage to reach NASA. The success it obtained allowed it to expand to Latin American countries such as Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic. This program has an alliance with the NASA Space Center and is focused on both educational areas and soft skills (leadership, teamwork, critical thinking).

As indicated previously, these girl leaders are the winners of this third edition, so it is inferred that there will be more missions of this program in the coming years, since the purpose of the president of She Is is to motivate more female students to participate. of She is an Astronaut and thus continue to break gender stereotypes. “We want to continue contributing to get more girls and women interested in and excelling in STEAM areas,” said Nadia Sánchez Gómez.

What are STEAM trainings like?

The She’s an Astronaut program offers virtual and in-person training at NASA’s Houston Space Center. Such trainings last four and a half months.

That is, on the one hand, for four months they will take remote workshops focused on STEAM careers (robotics, leadership, financial education, emotional intelligence, engineering, among others), for which they will develop a project, and participate in talks with representatives of these fields. .

On the other hand, the following week corresponds to five days of in-person training; Therefore, these girls will travel to NASA facilities and present everything they have learned and obtained in the STEAM projects. This will allow them to receive feedback and be able to apply it to their communities of origin in order to promote change, transform opportunities and contribute to the improvement of their country.
