As is known, Peru will commemorate a new holiday national the Friday June 7, according to the provisions approved by the State. This holiday, created in 2023, will honor Flag Day and the Battle of Arica, coinciding with a historic date for the country. The new holiday was incorporated into the national calendar this year due to delays in the vote and promulgation of the law in 2023. For this reason, and as part of the celebrations of this date, the Government has arranged a series of commemorative activities that will require the closure of streets in different parts of the capital.

This non-working day applies to all public and private institutions and entities in the country, so all workers, regardless of their work regime, will have the right to paid rest. As an additional detail, the Municipality of Lima has announced the closure of several streets in the Cercado de Lima due to the Flag Day ceremony, which is celebrated this June 7, in the plaza Francisco Bolognesi.

This street closure will be effective from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm; and a vehicle detour plan will be applied on the main avenues near the square, so that employees of ministries, municipalities and other government entities, as well as private institutions, will be able to choose to work and receive double salary or financial compensation in another working date.

In order to justify these celebrations, the Executive has designated the Ministry of Defense to, through the Peruvian Army, be in charge of organizing the ceremony to renew the oath of allegiance to the flag of Peru. This ceremony will be carried out in all State entities, following a protocol defined by the Ministry.

In Lima, the main event takes place in front of the monument to the hero Francisco Bolognesi, located in the square that bears his name. The ceremony will be attended by government and army authorities, who will pay tribute to historical figures such as Colonel Alfonso Ugarte and Bolognesi himself. In the commemorative events, the bravery of Ugarte will be highlighted, who, according to history, jumped off a cliff with the flag of Peru to prevent the enemy from capturing it, and Bolognesi, famous for his defense of Arica with the phrase “ until the last cartridge is burned.”

To facilitate the development of the ceremony and guarantee the safety of attendees, the Municipality of Lima has ordered the closure of several streets in the Cercado de Lima and has recommended drivers use alternative routes. The vehicular detours will be as follows:

Vehicular traffic in Lima generates more than 6 million soles in losses per year
Vehicular traffic in Lima generates more than 6 million soles in losses per year
  • From north to south: The suggested route is Alfonso Ugarte – Av. Bolivia – Av. Garcilaso de la Vega.
  • From south to north: It is recommended to use these two routes: (1) Av. Brasil – Av. 28 de Julio – Av. Garcilaso de la Vega; and (2) Av. Salaverry – Av. 28 de Julio – Av. Washington
  • From East to West: The alternative route includes three options (1) Av. Grau – Av. Garcilaso – Av. Uruguay – Av. Venezuela – Av. Arica; (2) Av. Grau – Av. Paseo de la República – July 28; (3) Av. Grau – Av. Paseo de la República – 28 de Julio – Jr. Restauración – Gral. Varela – Av. Arica
  • From west to east: Drivers can take Av. Arica – Av. Bolivia – Av. Garcilaso – Av. Grau.

This measure seeks to minimize the impact on traffic and facilitate access to the areas surrounding Plaza Francisco Bolognesi, where the main ceremony takes place. The Municipal Administration has urged drivers to plan their routes in advance and avoid restricted areas. He has also suggested the use of public transportation as an alternative to get around during street closures.

Additionally, June also celebrates Saint Peter and Saint Paul’s Day on June 29, making this month one with two significant holidays.
