The history of the La Emperatriz locomotive

Originally intended for rapid freight and passenger service, locomotive 2816 operated primarily in eastern Canada for nearly three decades before its retirement on May 26, 1960.

She subsequently served as a roving ambassador for Canadian Pacific, traveling throughout Canada and the United States, before being put into storage in 2012. After a decade of dormancy, the locomotive has been carefully restored by a dedicated team of railroaders, prepared to revive its legacy in an unprecedented commemorative tour.

The 2816 restoration project has been led by a group of railroad workers, who have contributed their specialized knowledge to bring this steam engine back to life.

“You can build two somewhat identical steam engines in the same shop,” reflects veteran team member and water treatment specialist Jim Scott. “But like twins, after a year on the rails, they have completely different personalities.”
