Russia will respond to ban on imports of Russian agricultural products by Lithuania

Moscow, June 6 (Sputnik).- Russia will take retaliatory measures in relation to the introduction by the Lithuanian authorities of a ban on imports of a series of agricultural products from Russia, declared the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

“In connection with Vilnius’ upcoming hostile measures, Russia will take appropriate retaliatory measures,” Zakharova warned.

According to the spokesperson, Vilnius’ decision shows the persistent desire to continue “a destructive line” towards a complete rupture of bilateral trade and economic relations.

“Such ‘shots in the foot’, even if they win the approval of Vilnius’s backers abroad, are unlikely to have a significant impact on economic cooperation between our countries, which in fact has already been curtailed by their initiative.” Zakharova said.

He recalled that Lithuania’s total share in Russia’s total foreign trade volume is less than 0.2 percent, so there are no negative effects of Lithuanian sanctions on the Russian economy.

In April, the Lithuanian Parliament passed a law banning the import of agricultural products and feed from Russia and Belarus.

The list of prohibited products approved by the Lithuanian Government came into force on June 3 and includes 24 groups of goods such as live animals, meat, fish, milk and dairy products, eggs, honey, nuts, vegetables, fruits, alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic, tobacco products and others.
