What were Che Guevara’s last words before he died?

Ernesto “Che” Guevara left a mark in world history. He was born on June 14, 1928 in Rosario and became a Marxist revolutionary, guerrilla, writer and military leader.

His participation in the Cuban Revolution alongside Fidel Castro propelled him to fame, consolidating its image as a symbol of resistance and anti-imperialist struggle.

Guevara died on October 9, 1967, after he was captured and executed in La Higuera, Bolivia. Despite his death, Che’s legacy lived on, inspiring movements and also controversy around the world.

Che Guevara’s last words before dying

Felix Rodriguez The CIA agent who commanded the capture of the communist leader in Bolivia had one last conversation with him before he was executed. As Rodríguez recalled, Che Guevara turned white as a sheet when he was informed that he had to obey the request of the Bolivian high command.

“Commander, I’m sorry, these are orders from the Bolivian high command,” Rodríguez told him. To which he answered: “It’s better this way, I should never have been taken alive.”

Che Guevara asked them to say goodbye to his wife.

Then, inside the cell, the prisoner gave him a pipe for being a “little soldier who had behaved well.” In addition, he commissioned her to carry two messages: one addressed to his political partner and another to a member of his family.

The message to his companion was: “Tell Fidel that he will soon see a triumphant revolution in America“, while the warning to his family was: “Tell my wife to get married again and try to be happy.”

Finally, Rodríguez ordered Sergeant Mario Terán to shoot and end Che’s life.

After being executed, the body of “Che” Guevara was displayed by Bolivian army officers in Valle Grande, Bolivia. That image was iconic and marked a before and after of the guerrilla experiences.

Terán, who died in 2022 at the age of 80 after a long illness, had recounted years after the execution the moments before the execution: “It was the worst moment of my life. I saw ‘Che’ big, very big, enormous. His His eyes were shining brightly. I felt like he was coming at me and when he looked at me, I felt dizzy. I thought that with a quick movement, ‘Che’ could take the gun from me. ‘Be calm,’ he told me, ‘and aim well!’ kill a man!’ “Then I took a step back, toward the doorway, closed my eyes and fired.”
