MEXICO CITY, June 18, 2024.- In an increasingly digital world, digital badges have become a differentiating factor in the labor market. These recognitions certify competencies and skills, and can make the difference between being considered or discarded during a recruiting process, said María Eugenia Castillo, National Director of Executive and Graduate Programs at Tecmilenio University.

He explained that, as technology advances, digital badges offer a new and efficient way to validate professional competencies, adding that each digital badge is unique and is composed of an image and metadata that contains accreditation information.

In addition to the image provided by the issuing organization, it includes specific details that allow its origin to be validated and its authenticity certified in real time. These badges seek to “recognize the competencies and achievements obtained, either through the completion of a certificate or participation in a relevant experience or initiative,” said the director.

María Eugenia Castillo explained that a key aspect of digital badges is their visibility. Unlike physical diplomas, which can be lost or damaged, digital badges are always available in digital format and can be carried on various online platforms.

He added that this feature transforms the way recruiters select talent, as it is now possible to validate specific knowledge and achievements more efficiently. Badges act as extended resumes, evidencing acquired skills that are more focused on employability.

He explained that in addition to being visible and portable, digital badges are also verifiable and secure thanks to blockchain technology, which guarantees their authenticity and builds trust for both the badge holder and potential employers.

He added that Tecmilenio has implemented this type of certifications since 2020 in collaboration with Credly, a pioneer organization in competency-based accreditations. “These badges can be shared across platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook, making it easy to highlight achievements and competencies,” she said.

He explained that in Tecmilenio, digital badges are awarded in various education programs. Among the programs with the greatest demand are Python Programming in High School, with 6,330 certifications; Strategic Management and Quantitative Analysis in Master’s, with 4,967 and 4,931 issues respectively; and Logistics and Supply Chain in Executive Professional with 1,379 accredited.

These figures demonstrate the impact and acceptance of digital badges as valuable tools to improve employability and stand out in today’s competitive labor market, concluded the National Director of Executive and Graduate Programs at Tecmilenio University.
