Dune is one of the cinematographic phenomena of the 2020s, and although throughout history the universe of Frank Herbert has had many video games, such as Dune Spice Warsthe most ambitious and expected is Dune: Awakening.
This Funcom game was first announced at Gamescom 2022, and is on the way to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Before the first pure gameplay they show at Gamescom 2024, today they have presented another Dune Awakening Directwith new information on many topics in more than 30 minutes of exclusive images and interviews:
Dune Awakening will be expanded for years with new maps
As announced in its Summer Game Fest trailer, Dune Awakening will deal with an alternate timeline, in which Jessica Atreides gave birth to a daughter, instead of the Paul Atreides which would become the Lisan al Gaib.
On that playing field, with more freedom, you will play the game, in which you begin by creating a character, choosing all the details of the appearance, personality and specialization: Mentat, Swordmaster or Bene Gesserit.
It’s about a Survival game open world, and third-person action, in which you can ally yourself with the Great Houseslike the Harkonnen and the Atreides.
“Making the world feel seamlessly integrated and connected has always been one of our goals in Dune: Awakening.“explains Joel Bylos, creative director.
The game will be structured with several massive sandbox maps, a system called Overland Mapwhich will allow more players to play in each of them.
“We built this structure with the idea of making the game expandable, something difficult with a single map. The idea of the Overland Map is to allow us to continue developing the world and give players new spaces to explore. Who knows what it will look like in 5 years?“.
Although Dune Awakening is not a direct adaptation, they have had the collaboration of Greig Fraser, director of photography, and the creative team of the films in Legendary Pictures.
That way, even though it’s their own interpretation of the world of Dune, there are stylistic coherence between game and movie, so that players feel like they are part of the same world.
