Juan Ramón de la Fuente was born in Mexico City in 1951. He is a Surgeon from the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), a Master of Science from the University of Minnesota, United States.
He completed a residency in Psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he became Chief Resident. Upon his return to Mexico, he joined the Faculty of Medicine as a professor and continued his academic career, first at the then National Institute of Nutrition and later at the National Institute of Psychiatry.
At UNAM he held various positions that allowed him to promote research, in addition to serving as Secretary of Health in the Federal government between 1994 and 1999. He is a member of several scientific societies and has been president of the Mexican Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.
