Claudia Sheinbaum, president-elect of Mexico, appointed this Thursday Mario Delgado Carrillo as the new head of the Ministry of Public Education (SEP). He will therefore take office on October 1, 2024.

Mario Delgado Carrillo currently serves as the national president of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).

Mario Delgado announced that he feels “honored” to be appointed to head a Secretariat, starting Claudia Sheinbaum’s term until 2030.

“There are important issues regarding education. First tell the teachers that we will be their allies and will closely follow this dialogue to resolve some pending requests such as the issue of ISSSTE pensions.”

His homeland is Colima, a small state of the Republic where he was born on June 17, 1972, the result of the relationship between Felipe de Jesús Delgado Guízar and Leticia Carrillo Huerta, who have an outstanding career in public service in the entity.

Around the age of 19, he settled with his family in Mexico City, where he decided to further his studies.

Mario Delgado has a degree in Economics, having obtained this degree between 1991-1995, at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM).

He then completed his master’s degree, also in economics, from 1996-1997 at the University of Essex, England, a constituent country of the United Kingdom on the European continent.

Around the year 2000 he married Sofía López Mendoza, with whom he had two children, Ana Victoria and Mario.

According to information from the current leader of Morena, in 2010 he received the Professional Merit award given by the ITAM and the Alumni Association and in 2011 I was recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader.

The first meetings with the current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador were in 2006, as he actively participated in his presidential campaign, as well as in that of Marcelo Ebrard, who was running for Head of Government.

During the government of Marcelo Ebrard, who assumed the position of Head of Government in 2006, he served as Secretary of Finance and Secretary of Education.

He was then elected as Senator of Mexico City in 2012, where he began with some proposals related to animal welfare and to reverse the so-called “gasolinazo.”

Already in the AMLO administration, from September 2018 to October 2020, he coordinated the Morena Parliamentary Group in the Chamber of Deputies, from where he presented initiatives such as some reforms that, in his opinion, served to change the country’s economic and political model.

She formulated proposals to modify laws in favor of women; remove presidential immunity; guarantee scholarships and pensions as social rights; and create the National Guard.

Mario Delgado was elected as National President of Morena in October 2020, at which time he pledged to promote the national project of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the so-called fourth transformation.
