The University of Santiago de Compostela is the only one in Galicia that offers Medicine.

The Interuniversity Commission of Galicia (CIUG) has revealed this Tuesday the cut-off marks for the different degrees that will be taught in the autonomous community starting in September. Medicinewhich can only be done at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), has been left with a 12,900which is the third highest qualification in the region. Only the double degrees in Mathematics and Physics and Computer Engineering and Mathematics – both from USC – are above this, with 13.590 and 13.252, respectively.

In this way, the situation of the 2023/2024 academic year is repeated, when these double technical degrees were also placed ahead of Medicine, which was again relegated to the Third placeHowever, the cut-off mark has risen in all three courses. In the case of the health degree, the minimum score for admission has gone from 12.690 to the aforementioned 12.900. This is a difference of more than two-tenths of a point compared to the previous academic year.

An increase in the grade due to the high demand for the degree in Medicine at the USC. More than 3,000 students have applied to enter the Galician educational center, which offers 403 places first-year courses for these studies. Despite the large difference between applicants and those admitted, this university is the one that offers the largest number of enrolments for future doctors in all of Spain.

Pre-university students who have managed to find a place to study Medicine in Santiago de Compostela will be able to formalize their registration between Wednesday, July 10 – from 00:01 – and Thursday, July 11 – until 23:59 -, according to the CIUG. The organization has indicated that those who do not get a place in the desired studies will be able to remain on the waiting list, to take advantage of foreseeable cancellations.


Dentistry and Nursing are on the rise

Beyond Medicine, the rest of the degrees in the health branch, as usual, have cut-off marks above average. odontologyalso offered only by USC in Galicia, requires a score of 12.740 for admission, the fourth highest score for access to university studies in the autonomous community.

In addition, the cut-off marks of Nursingone of the most demanding courses with the results of the university entrance exam (ABAU in its Galician acronym) and also one of the most offered by educational centers in the region. Thus, the USC requires a 12.152 to take it in Santiago de Compostela, a 11.458 for its campus in Lugo and a 11.202 for Ferrol. For its part, the University of Vigo asks for 11.612 to carry it out at the Meixoeiro University School of Nursing and somewhat less for its equivalent at Povisa, 10.830. In addition, the Vigo institution marks the minimum for the Pontevedra campus at 11.350 and for the Ourense campus at 11.294. Finally, the University of A Coruña leaves the score for future nursing students at 11.716.


Pharmacy, Psychology and Physiotherapy remain below

The cut-off mark for Pharmacy for the 2024/2025 academic year in Galicia it remains at 11.306. As with Medicine and Dentistry, this degree can only be taken at the USCwhich also offers a double degree between this course and Optics, the limit for which is set at 11.694. Nor can you study Psychology in the autonomous community beyond Santiago de Compostela, where they require a 11.184 in order to enroll.

However, the university of the Galician capital does not offer the degree of Physiotherapy. If you wish to enroll in these studies, pre-university students will have to send their application to the University of A Coruña, where the cut-off mark is 11.198, or to the University of Vigo, which offers this degree on its Pontevedra campus, with an entry mark of 11.030 for the first year.

The only degree in the health branch that does not require a minimum of 10 to be able to enter a Galician university is the Optics and Optometry. It is taught at USC, where they require a 9.950.
