Rigoberto Urán has given a lot to talk about recently. ‘Rigo’, the RCN Channel novel, showed the difficult obstacles that the ‘Toro de Urrao’ had to overcome to gain a place on the podiums of the most prestigious races in the sport of cranks. The 36-year-old rider from Antioquia can say that he overcame poverty and violence, with effort, discipline and insistence.
Urán was born on January 26, 1987 in Urrao, a small municipality located in the southwest subregion of the department of Antioquia. He discovered his talent on a ‘steel horse’ at an early age and began competing in local events. His father, who was also called Rigoberto Urán and was one of his main mentors, was murdered by an armed group outside the law when ‘Rigo’ was barely 14 years old.
The runner overcame this painful loss and continued pursuing his dream. He won Colombia’s Vuelta del Porvenir in consecutive editions (2004 and 2005), beating Fabio Duarte and Sergio Luis Henao, respectively. In 2006, he was signed by the Italian team Team Tenax and in one of his first races, on pave, he crashed, fracturing his collarbone. Urán once again showed a show of resilience and fought to recover his level.

He arrived at Unibet.com the following season and achieved his first victory on the ‘old continent’: a stage in Bicicleta Vasca. The rest is history… he was twice runner-up in the Giro d’Italia, got a second place in the 2017 Tour de France and won fractions in the three ‘big ones’. Urán was able to raise his family and, currently, he is a great businessman in addition to continuing to compete with EF Education-EasyPost.
