Finally, two years after winning us over with its first season, there is news of the new episodes of ‘Sandman’, the Netflix series that adapts Neil Gaiman’s graphic novels. The production has revealed the new names and characters that will join the second season. Among them, It is impossible not to highlight Jack Gleeson, who played Joffrey Baratheon in ‘Game of Thrones’ and who, after finishing his run on the series, decided to leave acting to focus on his studies. In ‘Sandman’, he will play Puck, a shape-shifting creature known for being a prankster, trickster and dangerous.

As we see in the publication of the official account of the series, Ruairi O’Connor joins the cast as Orpheus, the son of Dream and Calliope. In addition, Indya Moore will be Wanda, Ann Skelly the fairy Nuala and Douglas Booth her brother, Cluracan. From Norse mythology, Freddie Fox will be Loki (another version of the same God of Mischief that we know from Marvel), Laurence O’Fuarain will be Thor and Clive Russell will be Odin. Finally, Steve Coogan will voice Barnabas, a talking dog who was Destruction’s companion.

‘Sandman’ stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, who reprises his role in the second season, and in May the castings of Adrian Lester, Esme Creed-Miles and Barry Sloane as Delirium, Destiny and The Prodigal were also announced.

The most anticipated character

According to Gaiman, executive producer of ‘Sandman’ and creator of the comics, the character he is most looking forward to seeing on screen is Wanda (Indya Moore), a transgender woman. Moore is also a trans woman and her work includes ‘Pose’, ‘Nimona’ and ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’.

Of course, the series seems to have merged this character with that of Ruby DeLonge, a woman who works at a travel agency. Ruby accompanied Dream and Delirium on a road trip in search of the Prodigal, while Wanda had a less prominent role, being Barbie’s (Lily Travers) roommate. This is what Gaiman said about the character:

“A professional chauffeur and security agent for an exclusive travel company, Wanda proves to be an indispensable guide on an endless road trip into the waking world. […] Wanda started for me in 1988, because I had trans friends and I didn’t see them reflected in the comics I was reading, so I decided to create a trans woman in a mainstream comic book – it was the first time that had happened. For over three decades, people have been telling me that she was an inspiration. I’m thrilled that, 35 years later, she’s coming to the screen in all her glory.”

Away from the spotlights

After being fictionally killed in ‘Game of Thrones’ in 2014, Gleeson studied Theology and Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 2015. He spent nine years away from the cameras until he returned to acting in 2023 with a small role in ‘Sex Education’, where he was Moe el Chungo, a friend of Maeve’s brother. Before all that, Gleeson was seen in ‘Reign of Fire’, ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘Death’s Head’. He is also part of the cast of ‘In the Land of Saints and Sinners’, which premieres this Wednesday, July 3 in Spanish cinemas.

And returning to ‘Sandman’, whose second season still has no release date, Clive Russell, Odin, also appeared in ‘Game of Thrones’, where he played Brynden Tully.
