Outgoing UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has asked the country for “forgiveness” following the Conservative Party’s debacle in the general elections on Thursday, where Keir Starmer’s Labour Party swept the board.

This is what Sunak made known during his farewell speech at the door of number 10 Downing Street, before heading to Buckingham Palace to make the oath before King Charles of England.

In a brief five-minute appearance, Sunak began by asking the country for “forgiveness” and acknowledging that the British people have sent a “clear message” that “the British Government must change.”

“I accept all the responsibility for this defeat“Sunak said before extending his apology to his fellow Conservatives. Faced with this situation, Sunak has thus announced that he will “leave the leadership of the party” although not “immediately” but “when all the formal arrangements for choosing a successor are ready.”

Buckingham Palace has confirmed the resignation in a brief statement in which it can be read that “The Honourable Rishi Sunak MP met in audience with the King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, something that His Majesty has accepted“.
