According to the press secretary of the head of the Hungarian government, Bertalan Havasi, the purpose of the visit is to further strengthen interstate, commercial and economic relations between both countries, as well as expand cooperation in new areas.
This year marks 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Hungary and China.
Budapest attaches great importance to economic cooperation with the People’s Republic, while Chinese companies invest several billion euros in the Hungarian economy.
In particular, both nations collaborate in establishing factories for the production of electric vehicles and car batteries and participate in large infrastructure projects.
Preparations for Xi’s visit to Budapest were discussed with Chinese government representatives by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó, who visited Beijing on April 23-24.
Orban last met with the President of the People’s Republic of China in October 2023 during the Belt and Road international forum held in Beijing.
The visit to Hungary will be the last stop of the Chinese president’s European trip.
As announced by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Xi will stay in France, Serbia and Hungary from May 5 to 10.
