During the current five-year period, Panama has worked actively to strengthen its diplomatic ties with African countries. This effort has resulted in the formalization of diplomatic relations with six nations: Kenya, Cape Verde, Mauritania, Rwanda, Uganda and Zimbabwe, a diplomatic note states.

In statements to the newspaper La Estrella de Panamá, Tewaney stated that the Isthmus country must strengthen its commercial relations with Africa and expand commercial ties with that continent.

As reported, bilateral trade figures are low, since from 2010 to February 2024 Panama has only exported 20 million dollars to that region, while imports had a value of 475.6 million dollars.
