The Minister of Transport and Communications of Peru, Raúl Pérez Reyes, He maintained that the business consortium in charge of the Chancay megaport, Cosco Shipping Ports Peru and the Volcan mining company, There will be no problems with exclusivity in the operation of the port terminal, considering that the modifications to the port law are advancing so that there are no legal difficulties.

“With the text that was approved in the first vote two weeks ago (in the Congress of the Republic) and that, I understand, will be voted this week in the second vote, the modifications to the port law will be made. “That will allow us to turn the page in relation to this debate around exclusivity,” he said in RPP, as reported by the Andina agency.

“On our side, we believe that the conditions would already be established in relation to the problem that existed. The law will allow exclusivity for a port authorization; then, the rule will be applied and Cosco Shipping will implement exclusivity in the Chancay megaport without any problem, having a law as protection and not an interpretation within the framework of a directorial resolution. “That guarantees legal security for investments,” he added.

The new Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminallocated in the district of the same name (Huaral province), 80 kilometers from Metropolitan Lima, is a private investment project whose shareholders are the Chinese-owned company Cosco Shipping Ports Limited (CSPL) with a 60% participation, and the Peruvian Volcano Mining Company with 40%.

“The Chancay megaport is a very important project, it is almost 80% complete and the work will be completed next November for its inauguration. There are small coordinations in relation to operating permits, infrastructure, telecommunications and minor things that complement the project,” said Raúl Pérez Reyes.

The minister commented that they are now focusing on complementary works for access to the Chancay megaport.

“A good part of the cargo that will go to Chancay comes from northern Peru, so we have to enable the Chancayllo area because it will be affected when a significant number of trucks arrive that are going to stop there and will no longer go to Callao,” he explained. .

Port industry

On the other hand, the minister highlighted the potential of the port industry in Peru, with the different investments that are being carried out and the great opportunities for the export sector.

“An interesting topic is the important moment for the port industry and the potential it has in terms of our viability as an exporting country, not only mining, but also agro-exporting,” he explained.

“In June, the expansion of the south dock in the port of Callao, carried out by Dubai Ports World, will be inaugurated. While APM Terminals is also making significant investments in the north quay,” he added.

Raúl Pérez Reyes highlighted that this increase in port capacity, with the start of operations of the Chancay megaport, places Peru in a privileged position in the Pacific, only below the port of Long Beach (California, United States), which It has direct contact with Asia.

“Just to give us an idea, of the ten most important ports in the world, nine are connected to Asia. Long Beach today is the main port that connects America with the Asian continent and Manzanillo (Mexico) is the second,” she explained.

“We are clearly going on the path of competing with Manzanillo and being an important reference for cargo to Asia. This will greatly boost our economic activity because they will come from other countries, from the south and the north, with their cargo so that we can take it to Asia, considering that it will reduce logistics costs,” he added.
