Havana-. The Russian Embassy in Cuba, the Ministry of Culture and the José Martí National Library (BNCJM) held a commemorative event today in this capital for the 79th anniversary of the Soviet victory against German Nazi fascism.

At the tribute, Russian language students from the Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​(FLEX) narrated the events that occurred during the so-called Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), recited poems and performed the musical theme “Katiushka” in Pushkin’s language.

On June 22, 1941, the German invasion against the Soviet Union began and with it a terrible time for the world; During those years, that country suffered losses of more than 27 million people, the destruction of more than 1,710 cities, 70,000 villages and towns, in addition to incalculable damage to industry and agriculture.

Soviet soldiers not only defended their country, but liberated Europe from the fascist invasion and reached Berlin, making the enemy lay down their arms.

On May 9, 1945, Victory Day, the people of Europe were looking forward to it; Because of it, rivers of blood were shed and the greatest hardships were endured, FLEX students expressed in the presentation.

At the ceremony, two short films were screened: one about the siege of the German troops on the city of Leningrad (1941-1944) and another about the Soviet government’s declaration during the victory in the war.

At the end, guests and organizers dedicated a minute of silence in memory of the fallen while wearing the St. George ribbon on their clothing.

Daria Kovaleva, representative of young Russian compatriots, shared with those present the meaning and history of the ribbon, a symbol of tradition and union of the different generations that remember the terrible moments experienced during the Second World War.

We, the younger generation, remember them; Virtually every family had someone who participated in the war, so I think this is a day to honor those who fell, he added.

Participating in the activity were Isla Soto Pérez, head of the Russian-Italian language department of the FLEX at the UH, Inna Sergueievna Chetii and Alexander Koriendasev, representatives of the Casa Rusa in Cuba, as well as directors of the BNCJM, members of the embassy and teachers and researchers of the Russian Language Specialist Group.

The day of commemoration for Victory Day will continue on May 9, 10 and 11.

May 9, known as Victory Day, commemorates the triumph of the Soviet Union and the troops of the allied countries over Nazi Germany in World War II (1939-1945).
