The Islamic State group (IS) claimed responsibility this Sunday (05/19/2024) for the attack against tourists in which three Spaniards and three Afghans died on Friday in the city of Bamiyan, in central Afghanistan.

The jihadist group indicated in a statement on its Telegram channels that “fighters fired machine guns on Christian tourists and their Shiite companions on Friday” in this tourist town.

The group of tourists was shot at a market in Bamiyan, which is about 180 km from the capital, Kabul.

ISIS declared that it attacked a “bus of tourists from coalition countries,” referring to the international coalition led by the United States to combat this jihadist organization in the Middle East.

“The attack follows the directives of the Islamic State leadership to attack citizens of the coalition countries wherever they are,” the statement added.

This attack is believed to be the first fatal attack against foreign tourists since the Taliban returned to power in 2021 in Afghanistan, a country where few nations have a diplomatic presence.
