Havana. — The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, congratulated Luis Abinader this Monday, on the occasion of his re-election as head of the Dominican Republic, Prensa Latina reported

In his social network X, the Cuban president reaffirmed his willingness to continue strengthening the historical relations that unite both sister nations.

This Sunday, Abinader achieved his re-election in the first round for a second term that will last until 2028, according to the final results provided by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) that same night. At that time, the president was leading the elections with 58.4% of the votes, compared to 2.5% for former president Leonel Fernández and 10.8% for the mayor of Santiago de los Caballeros, Abel Martínez.

Congratulations from other governments

President Abinader is being congratulated by several governments due to Sunday’s elections. Preliminary results show that he has won in the first round, just as the polls predicted. With 64.16% of the votes counted, Abinader and his allies from the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) have 58.39%, followed by former president Leonel Fernández with 27.68% and Abel Martínez of the Dominican Liberation Party with 10.79%, according to the Central Electoral Board.

The Government of Venezuela, in a statement, congratulated the Dominican people and their institutions for their outstanding participation in the elections and wished President Abinader much success in the progress and well-being of his country, recognizing the vote of confidence he has received from his voters. to lead his country.

Similarly, the leader of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, congratulated his counterpart and the Dominican people on their electoral victory and Sunday’s democratic exercise, and highlighted his commitment to continue strengthening ties of friendship and cooperation.

The Government of Spain also congratulated the president on his re-election and the people of the Dominican Republic. “Congratulations, Luis Abinader, on your re-election for a second presidential term on an exemplary election day,” said the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in a message on a social network.

The re-elected president was also congratulated by his Guatemalan counterpart, Bernardo Arévalo, and the governments of Bolivia, Peru and Mexico, among others. Former Argentine President Alberto Fernández praised the president “for renewing the confidence of the Dominican Republic in his leadership. “I celebrate your continuity and wish you success in this new stage,” he said.

More than eight million Dominicans were called to the polls this Sunday to elect the president and vice president of the Republic, 32 senators, 190 deputies, 20 representatives to the Central American Parliament (Parlacen) and the same number of substitutes.
