The French president Emmanuel Macron He received his American counterpart this Saturday in Paris, Joe Bidenon a state visit that included conversations about the Middle East, Ukraine and international trade.

Saturday’s visit began with a ceremony at the iconic Arc de Triomphe, where leaders paid their respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Then, escorted by French horse guards, they rode down the famous Champs-Elysées avenue. The day concluded with a dinner at the French presidential palace, where celebrities such as Pharrell Williams and John McEnroe joined political and business leaders.

The US and French presidents share a warm relationship despite past tensions over a submarine deal with Australia. Biden received Macron on a state visit to the White House in 2022.

Both They agree on their countries’ support for Ukraine and opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin. A joint roadmap released by the presidents included a commitment to support efforts to use frozen Russian assets to help kyiv.

“The United States stands firm with Ukraine. We stand with our allies. “We stand with France,” Biden said. “Putin is not going to stop with Ukraine (…) All of Europe will be threatened. “We are not going to allow that to happen.”

Beyond Ukraine, trade issues on both sides of the Atlantic gained importance, especially in relation to the United States Inflation Reduction Actwhich Biden signed into law in August 2022. European officials consider it a protectionist measure that diverts investments from EU companies.

Although the bilateral events with France began this Saturday, the American leader had landed in the European country last Wednesday, June 5, to participate in the commemorations of the 80 years since the Normandy Landings which contributed decisively to the fall of Nazi Germany in World War II.

Biden will conclude his trip to France this Sunday by laying a wreath at the Aisne-Marne cemetery (northeast), where the graves of almost 2,300 soldiers from his country killed during the First World War are.
