Mario Colomina, A young man from Barcelona was on the verge of death due to a serious bacterial infection that he contracted from biting his nails. Colomina, affected by the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, shared his story in a video on social networks to alert others about the dangers of this habit.

In her story, Colomina explained that the bacteria was introduced into her body through infected nails. “The bacteria seeped through my skin and formed a nest in the mitral valve of my heart. Every time my heart pumped, the bacteria spread throughout my body, causing embolisms in the brain, kidneys and spleen,” he detailed. The infection became so severe that doctors had to replace her mitral valve.

According to the Mayo Clinic, staph infections can be fatal if the bacteria invade the bloodstream, joints, bones, lungs, or heart. This was the case of Colomina, who had to undergo open heart surgery to save her life.

The young man recalled that the first symptoms appeared while he was with friends. “I started to feel fever and vomiting. I spent several days in the hospital with medication, but my condition worsened without a clear diagnosis. The fever paralyzed one of my legs,” story.
