Russia is ready to take into account the proposals of the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in order to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday (4.07.2024) while speaking at the summit of this grouping in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

“We thank the SCO members for their proposal to resolve this conflict. Russia is certainly ready to take into account your ideas and initiatives,” he said.

The Russian president stressed that “in the current conditions, when the world is undergoing rapid and irreversible changes, the CSO’s active position and initiative in the international space is necessary.” The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a regional bloc that includes Russia, China and other countries that have tense relations with Western powers, will advocate at today’s summit in Astana for a “fair multipolar world order,” the Russian president also said.

Putin stressed that “Russia has always advocated and continues to advocate a political-diplomatic solution to the situation in Ukraine, a crisis that arose as a result of the absolutely rude policy of the United States and its satellites.”

“We have repeatedly put forward concrete proposals in this regard. I would like to remind you that in mid-June another solution was put forward, which, if approved by the Ukrainian side and above all by its Western sponsors, would have allowed an immediate end to hostilities, saved lives and started negotiations,” he added.

Ahead of the summit on Ukraine in Switzerland in mid-June, the Russian president demanded the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the annexed regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia, Kiev’s refusal to join NATO and an end to Western sanctions, and in exchange he would order an immediate ceasefire and the start of peace negotiations.

These conditions were rejected not only by kyiv but also by the West, which reiterated its support for the Ukrainian cause.
