The leaders of the seven richest democracies in the world They began their annual summit this Thursday in Italy seeking to seal an agreement for an ambitious aid plan for Ukraine in the form of a loan of 50 billion dollarsfinanced with Russian assets blocked by the West.
The presidents of the United States, Joe Bidenand France, Emmanuel Macronas well as the prime ministers of Canada, (Justin Trudeau), United Kingdom (Rishi Sunak), Japan (Fumio Kishida) and Germany (Olaf Scholz) joined the host, the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloniin the luxury resort of Borgo Egnazia, in the southern region of Apulia, next to the Adriatic Sea.
Also attending were the president of the European Commission, Ursula von Der Leyenand that of the European Council, Charles Michel.
The objective is to use the interests generated by those close to 300,000 million euros ($325 billion) in Russian assets, frozen by Western allies after the February 2022 invasion, as collateral to grant a $50 billion loan to Ukraine.
