Description submitted by the project team. Wisteria is a dramatic wood expression of simplicity and purity. A contemporary addition to a fully restored Federation bungalow in Sydney’s inner west, its expansive form absorbs sunlight and fosters a deep connection with the outdoors. Located in a heritage conservation area, its new airy volume unfolds in a delicate manifestation of a brief that called for an open, warm home in which a family could truly come together, one that respected the history of the home while adding thoughtful contemporary layers. . A light and airy pavilion is rhythmically expressed in Australian cedar.

Inside, a double-height void opens the living space to sunlight and air, deepening the links between the private spaces above and the places below where the family gathers. A fireplace divides the open-plan living space, kitchen and dining spaces, which flow serenely onto the east-facing terrace covered by a wisteria-covered pergola that frames the garden view. It is a home perfectly suited for entertaining and elevating the simple daily ritual of a meal in the sun.

The addition unfolds from a distinct intersection between old and new that helps the home negotiate its sloping terrain. A wide staircase combines concrete and wood to create a processional entrance to the new space, which also serves as seating. To one side, a white steel plate staircase rises to the first floor, with the entire space wrapped in a combination of timber, fixed glazing and adjustable louvers for cross ventilation. A dramatic vertical expansion from the existing corridor, it announces the intention of the addition as a bright, spacious, double-height volume, open to the landscape, cleverly taking advantage of the change in level to allow the house to gently nestle into the landscape and the new roof line merges with the old. Keeping the original house and contemporary addition separate, there are small gardens flanking the staircase. Pockets of opportunity, wells of light between new and old, these gardens encourage light and breezes throughout the design.

Structured with intention, this carefully organized plan maintains a light, elevated spatial quality that offers infinite potential for informal interaction within defined spaces. Serving a brief that called for light, air and an unobstructed connection to the outside, the deep window sills at the rear of the house are fitted with wooden slats and blinds that maximize the openness of the building while defending against the intense summer heat, giving customers control over sunlight and breezes. These sill frames frame the garden view in a mesmerizing and rhythmic way, adding an extra layer of utility in the form of desks, window seats and storage.

Rhythmic masonry, polished concrete, wooden frames and striking moments expressed in steel and marble represent a palette of material and visual simplicity; a clean and sophisticated interior that feels warm, bright and calm. It is an addition that complements the beautiful existing garden, resplendent with purples of wisteria and jacarandas, and understands that a deep connection with these outdoor spaces transforms a house into a home, a vessel for genuine human experience and deep family relationships.
