A stately apartment that combines classicism and modern design

”The project was carried out after the beginning of a large-scale invasion. Despite unforeseen challenges and frequent power interruptions in Ukraine during construction, our team successfully achieved all assigned tasks,” is how the architects and interior designers of Modektura Studio begin the story of this brave project.

The apartment is located in the heart of kyiv, on Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street, inside a residential building dating back to 1900, distinguished by its classical architecture with high ceilings.

The original features of the home, such as the wide hallway with its windows and arches, a glazed gallery and a balcony, served as the cornerstone of the project concept. The hallway, which acts as the central artery, extends the length of the entire floor, effortlessly integrating all areas. Enhanced arches exude sophistication, achieved by fusing decorative moldings and an interior wood frame. The gallery was isolated and seamlessly incorporated into the kitchen, where a greenhouse for plants was also placed.

During the analysis phase of the project, numerous visual distractions were identified, resulting from niches in the walls, variations in floor height and exposed services. Consequently, during the demolition stage, it was decided to renew the floor and reinforce the windows and openings with a metal frame.

To conceive a feeling of stability and tranquility, materials such as stained oak, marble, stainless steel and brass were meticulously selected. Experimentally, sand was incorporated into the terrazzo floor, and marble chips were embedded in the mineral plaster of the walls, improving its texture and visual appeal.

The apartment’s design interacts seamlessly with art in its various forms. Sculptures by Dmytro Hrek, a diptych by Rostyslav Zavhorodniy and paintings by Kristina Otchych-Cherniak elegantly complement the interior, enriching its aesthetic depth.

In the master bedroom, the glass window on the headboard wall that precedes the dressing room stands out and is inspired by Mondrian’s classic work.

Despite the challenges posed by the war, the project was carried out successfully, which deserves, at the very least, our congratulations.
