Book launched for the sustainable management of exotic or ‘passion’ fruits

Within the framework of the Bogotá Book Fair, the publishing label of the University of Cundinamarca presented the book ‘Perspectives for the sustainable management of passion fruits‘. This work represents a joint effort of teachers and researchers from the university’s Faculty of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences, aimed at exploring and detailing the agroindustrial potential of passionflowers in Colombia.

César Augusto Buitrago, editor of the University of Cundinamarca, highlighted in an interview for Livestock CONtext the relevance of this book in the context of Colombian agroindustry.

Buitrago pointed out that the book offers a preliminary vision of the entire process related to the detailed description of the passionflowers present in Colombia, such as passion fruit, passion fruit, curuba and gulupa, highlighting their potential to generate agroindustry in various economic sectors.

In addition, he emphasized the international economic importance of these fruits, especially in the United States, where they are attributed potential benefits for human health and well-being, including antioxidant and phytochemical properties.

“This book preliminarily explores the entire process that leads to the detailed description of the passionflowers that exist in Colombia and that have great potential in the generation of agroindustry in various sectors,” says the editor.

Although the gulupa is not so well known in Colombia, Buitrago highlighted its great potential at a local and international level as a possible generator of foreign currency for growers who decide to venture into its production.

The book addresses various topics relevant to the sustainable management of passionflowers, including strategies for controlling pests that affect these plants. This involves the identification of insects that negatively impact flowering and fruiting, as well as the recognition of beneficial species that can naturally counteract these pests.

Furthermore, they discuss fundamental aspects related to the methodology and fruit handling processessuch as the ideal harvesting, ripening and post-harvest handling times to guarantee the quality of the fruits in the market.

The book is available in the repository of the University of Cundinamarca.
