Within the framework of the edition 39 of the International Film Festival in Guadalajarathe filmmaker Annemarie Meie presented the second edition of his most recent book The short film: The art of narrating, emoting and meaning.

Accompanied by the short filmmaker Poli Villa, who was her student, they offered a talk to talk about what it takes to make short films, a format that seems simple, however, could not be further from reality.

Through seven chapters, the author addresses topics such as discursive strategies, emotion, empathy, intertextuality and the short film as an educational resource. Additionally, this edition included a new chapter that covers the expanded universe of the short film.

Regarding the issue of reduction involved in a short film, both Annemarie and Poli agreed that more than a reduction of content, it is about making a fine distillation of the narrative and the art of telling stories in a short space.

Short films rarely exceed 15 minutes, which is why the challenge for short filmmakers is to look for creative ways to narrate and excite, this can be through symbols and metaphors, although these resources are also present in feature films, they have a greater weight in the shorts.

In the presentation of this work, the topic of artificial intelligence was discussed, which, according to the author, is a tool that can be useful when creating stories, however, it will never be so effective when writing stories that really move. to the public, that’s something only humans can do.

Filmmaker Annemarie Meie shared with the audience that presenting short films was very useful when teaching German in Mexico, since through short films it was easier to teach the culture and language to her students, which is why she added the chapter of the short film as an educational resource.
