The inhabitants of the Caribbean Coast have been paying electricity bills for years that often triple or quadruple what a user from the same stratum pays in other parts of the country. In order to put a stop to this situation, The Ministry of Mines announced the implementation of three short-term measures.

The first of them is about the tariff option. Under this measure, it seeks to propose to companies in the sector, both energy marketers and generators, a refinancing mechanism.

“The tariff option is one of those debts that the previous government left us of about 5 billion pesos and that we have been addressing with a loan from Findeter (…) “We have identified that it is technically possible for companies to refinance that debt and we will be able to alleviate that burden on rates.”said the Minister of Mines and Energy, Andrés Camacho.

The second is about energy for the most vulnerable populations. In this, a differential energy price will be proposed to the generators, which can be delivered through the existing contracts of new differential contracts for the Caribbean, but also for renewable energy projects.

Third is the investment project in energy communities and distributed generation, that is, the massification of roofs and solar fields for homes in the Caribbean.

“We believe that investments, unlike what has been proposed, should be resources that are delivered directly to people so that they can self-generate their energy,” noted Camacho.

For this, the minister announced the designation of $117 billion for a grid standardization program, tailored to promote renewable energy in neighborhoods.

This plan, called Energy Sustainable Homes, expects to benefit 10,000 homes in the Atlantic with the installation of 1,000 photovoltaic solar solutions in strata 1 and 2.

Besides, A new program will be presented in collaboration with Findeter to facilitate the acquisition of credits, allowing the population to install their own solar panels.
