One of the first decisions that Gustavo Petro had to make when he became President in August 2022 was to change or ratify the superintendents who came from the Government of Iván Duque, his predecessor. He then opted for a Solomonic solution, appointing four new ones (Transportation, Notary and Registry, Home Public Services and Family Subsidy) and retaining the other six.

In that last combo was Jorge Castaño Gutiérrez, a lawyer who had been serving as Financial Superintendent since May 2017, that is, he was appointed by Juan Manuel Santos and ratified by both Duque and Petro. His main support in this last Government was the Prime Minister of the Treasury, José Antonio Ocampo, who made efforts to keep him, considering him a good asset, and he achieved it.

However, the departure of Ocampo from the cabinet in April 2023 also meant the departure of Castaño from the Superfinanciera, since he submitted his resignation a month later to make way for the Peruvian civil engineer, César Ferrari, who still remains in office.

The following months were spent linked to academia, particularly to the Department of Economic Law at the Externado University, from which he graduated. But now, exactly one year after his departure from the Government, a new great opportunity came to him, this time to be President of one of the most important companies in the country like Corficolombiana.

Jorge Castaño’s new challenge

The retirement of the third richest man in Colombia, Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo, in March 2024 generated a significant shock in Grupo Aval and consequently in the companies that comprise it. The first big change that was announced was the transition of his eldest son, Luis Carlos Sarmiento Gutiérrez, from the Presidency of the Group to that of its Board of Directors. Subsequently, it was announced that the former Minister of Mines and Energy, María Lorena Gutiérrez, was going to move from the Presidency of Corficolombiana to that of Aval and now, two months later, the new leadership of this business emporium was completed with the former financial superintendent.
