The filmmaker directs, stars, produces and scripts a new western epic in which he has invested $58 million of his own pocket

Kevin Costner returns to movie theaters in style. The director of the Oscar winner Dancing with Wolves premieres the first installment of his new western epic, Horizon: An American Saga, on June 28. In this new project, Coster not only directs, but also acts, produces and scripts the four films that will make up this saga. If you don’t know this ambitious work, you should know that it has generated a lot of interest in recent months. Costner is betting everything to ensure the success of the saga, investing 58 of the 100 million dollars in its budget out of its own pocket.

Until now, it was only known that he had contributed $38 million to the project, a figure that has increased according to a promotional interview with Empire Magazine. The 69-year-old actor has clarified that he has contributed 20 million more than was thought, although has not specified whether this money has gone to the production of one, two or three films of horizonsince the third installment of the saga is already underway.

“This money can also be translated into business. I hope I can get the money back, but I’m not going to be bitter if that doesn’t happen.. I will lose some things that I value, but I will also gain things that stay with me, “says the filmmaker before admitting that he would prefer not to risk so much in each of his projects.” I don’t want to have to do this againbut I don’t live my life in fear.”

I’m not stupid, but I’m not afraid to own this movie for the rest of my life. Movies are much more than the first weekend at the box office. They have lifetime value and I will own this film for mine. The public will learn a story that they will want to revisit and share with other people. That’s the power of a movie for me.

A kaleidoscopic western opera

The international press has already had the opportunity to enjoy the first installment of Horizon: An American Saga during the recent 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. Alejandro G. Calvo, director and critic of SensaCine, was one of the lucky ones: “It’s a western, it’s great, the thing is that it could have been better. […] Costner wanted to make a kaleidoscopic western opera. If there are four three-hour movies, he will have plenty of time to make a brutal and global portrait of the west“.

“I always regretted it”: Kevin Costner still regrets the failure of this 3-hour western in the 90s

Spanning the four years of the American Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, this Western delves into the colonization of the American West and the origins of the United States of America. The installment that arrives in movie theaters on June 28 also marks the acting debut of Hayes Costner, son of Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartne. The 15-year-old actor will appear in horizon giving life to a younger version of his father, sharing the screen with Sienna Miller, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Jamie Campbell and Sam Worthington, among others.
