The Untouchables by Eliot Ness, Dances with Wolves, and, the always rememberedThe Bodyguard, were the films that launched Kevin Costner to stardom, to the center of all eyes, inside and outside of Hollywood. The American performer was one of the most acclaimed and desired shoulders at the beginning of the 90s, awakening the interest even of members of royalty such as Lady Di.
In a recent interview with People, Costner confirmed that on one of his trips to England he received a message that Prince William wanted to see him. “We met in a room and it was just us,” the actor explained that he had no idea about the confession that the now Prince of Wales would make to him just a few minutes later. “He came up, shook my hand and the first thing that came out of his mouth was: ‘You know? My mother likes you a little‘”, added Costner, who although he did not want to give more details of that meeting, he did highlight the closeness and sweetness of the son of Charles III.
The statement It left the American interpreter stunned, who had already had the pleasure of meeting Princess Diana and was not aware of this interest. It was when the option of preparing the sequel to The Bodyguard, a project that finally did not see the light of day and in which precisely the name of Diana of Wales was one of those that was mentioned as the protagonist.
Kevin Cosner himself had suggested the idea of including Lady Di in this ‘film’ and he had the help of Sarah Ferguson, which facilitated contact between the two. As she points out in the interview itself, Diana of Wales seemed to be interested in making the leap to the big screen, she even asked her about what this second part would be like. Finally, the final script arrived in August 1997, just a few days before the princess’s fateful car accident in Paris took place that ended her life.
