Shigeru Miyamoto talks about his current role at Nintendo and the new generations at the company

Shigeru Miyamoto has spoken about his future during Nintendo’s annual shareholders meeting held this Thursday. Statements picked up on X (Twitter) by user @NStyles, in which he commented on his current role in the Japanese company and the importance of passing the baton to younger generations. An unrepeatable figure in the video game industry who is about to turn 72 years old, the father of Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda and a large number of characters remains linked to Nintendo, but is no longer part of the day-to-day running of the company.

“I appreciate your concern. Being the oldest among us makes me feel a little anxious. However, I feel comfortable working within the company. Although I am not completely disconnected from game development, I am no longer involved in the daily work and leave it in the hands of the younger generation,” Miyamoto declares during the annual shareholder meeting.

Shigeru Miyamoto and his possible retirement

The Japanese genius says he is looking forward to becoming the oldest person at the current Nintendo, a company where the young people he passed the baton to long ago are no longer so young, and the commitment to an even younger generation is clear. Miyamoto also said that “the transition is going well, but even those I passed this on to are getting older, so I want to pass the baton on to even younger people. I am still very involved in Pikmin Bloom, so I hope you will continue to support it.”

Is Shigeru Miyamoto’s retirement approaching? On November 16 he will turn 72, so this could happen at any time. News that, despite not being involved in the day-to-day as in the past, will have enormous impact for an industry that has grown around his figure. In 1977 he joined Nintendo and almost five decades later he is still part of it.
