Constance gave birth to Leighton in prison, and the little girl spent her first few months in an orphanage. Most of her relatives, including her aunt and maternal grandfather, were also incarcerated for their links to the drug gang.

Eventually, Leighton was released to her grandmother. “My family has a crazy history. Probably the craziest I’ve ever heard of,” the actress confessed in an interview with Marie Claire in 2012. Stephanie Savage, executive producer of the series, mentioned in an interview with Cosmopolitan that Meester’s personal history and energy were decisive factors in his selection.

Meester’s rise to stardom, however, was not without conflict. As his fame grew, his relationship with his mother deteriorated. Leighton had agreed to send her mother $7,500 a month for her younger brother’s medical expenses, but discovered that Constance was using the money for cosmetic surgeries. This led to a bitter legal battle. Her mother sued her, claiming they had a verbal agreement to receive $10,000 a month. Additionally, she demanded more money, arguing that she had sacrificed her own happiness and stability to support her daughter’s career.

Meester won the lawsuit, but the public dispute deeply damaged their relationship. Constance stated in InTouch in 2014 that her daughter had left her in a precarious economic and health situation. “I knew she was going to be a star and I dedicated my life to making sure that happened,” Constance said, revealing that she had even worked as an exotic dancer to make ends meet.

Leighton sought support from close friends and her husband, actor Adam Brody, whom she married in 2014. The couple has kept a low profile, focusing their lives on privacy and raising their children.
