The National Registry of Civil Status of Colombia, through External Circular No. 011 of February 5, 2021officially presented the digital ID, a new identification tool that seeks to modernize and improve security and efficiency in citizen procedures.

This initiative, which responds to the need of Colombians to have identification mechanisms that allow them to access services quickly, efficiently and reliably, guarantees the security of your data taking advantage of information and communications technologies.

The digital ID not only represents a significant technological advance, but it also becomes the key to access the digital citizen services of the State and the entities that provide their services through the Internet. This includes, among others, digital authentication, thus facilitating the interaction of citizens with different digital platforms and online services.

Benefits of the digital ID for the citizen

The new digital ID brings with it a series of benefits that seek to improve security, efficiency and confidence in the identification and authentication processes. Among the main benefits are:

1. Greater security: The digital ID card incorporates advanced technologies that make falsification or adulteration difficult, providing a more secure identification.

2. Impossibility of falsification or adulteration: The implementation of advanced security systems significantly reduces the risk of document forgery.

3. Identification and biometric authentication: The digital ID allows biometric identification and authentication, improving the accuracy and security of identity verification.

4. Non-face-to-face identification in web procedures: It facilitates the completion of online procedures without the need for physical presence, streamlining processes and saving citizens time.

Process to request the digital ID

To process the digital ID, citizens must follow a series of steps and meet certain specific requirements. The necessary steps are detailed below:

1. Go to the registry: Citizens must appear at a registry office to be served in order of arrival. Your biographical and biometric data will be enrolled or captured.

2. Provide the base document: Depending on the applicant’s situation, the following documents must be submitted:

  • Colombians by birth: Copy of the birth certificate with space for notes or the original biometric identity card. For those born before June 15, 1938, the baptismal certificate with certification of competence may be presented.
  • Children of foreigners born in Colombia: Copy of the birth certificate and, if necessary, proof of the parents’ domicile in the national territory.
  • Colombians by adoption: Copy of the letter of naturalization or registration resolution, accompanied by the oath certificate.

3. Confirm RH and blood group: It is important to confirm and record this information.

4. Digital photography: No physical photograph is required. The photo will be taken digitally at the registry office, following specific clothing recommendations.

5. Contact information: Provide a cell phone number and personal email, which will be used to send the digital password and other information associated with the procedure.

6. Voting station assignment: When carrying out the procedure for the first time, the citizen must indicate the voting station in which their identification document will be registered.

7. Data verification: Before completing the procedure, it is crucial that the citizen checks that all the data recorded is correct and matches the documents submitted. Signing implies agreement with the recorded information.
