“I wish I could say it’s me playing” — Futuro Chile

Tom Morello is one of the most outstanding guitarists of recent decades, but he never hesitates when it comes to bringing out his most fanatical side. That was the case recently, where the former member of Rage Against The Machine had to choose not only some of his favorite riffs, but also what he would like them to be his.

Speaking to Guitar Interactive magazine, the musician immediately launched into songs from probably three of his favorite bands. “Let’s go with The Ocean from Led Zeppelin, let’s go with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath from Black Sabbath and we go with Stormbringer from Deep Purple,” he chose.

The new Tom Morello

While they’re all great songs, Morello didn’t limit himself to legendary bands. That’s because another riff he acknowledged in the same interview was written by his 13-year-old son, Roman Morello, which ended up becoming “Solider in the Army of Love,” the first song on Tom’s new solo album released this past Friday.

“I wish I could say it was me,” Morello said enthusiastically about what his heir created, noting that Roman spent a lot of time practicing the instrument during the COVID-19 quarantine.

Tom Morello says: «One day I was passing by his room and he was playing some heavy riffs with an impressive drop-D. Asked: What’s that? And he told me: It just occurred to me«.

“He wrote the riffs, I produced it and played some on it, but the guitar solo is his too,” he adds about the song that he already declared is the “heaviest thing he’s released in a long time.”

Speaking about the overall feel of his upcoming album, Morello said: “I’ve made a lot of solo records, but this is the only one that really has a pure rock flavor. I’ve done alternative collaborations, electronic collaborations and folk music albums. But this is a Tom Morello solo rock album, and Soldier In The Army Of Love It’s a very appropriate first single for him.”
