Doctor convicted of sexual abuse in Monte Patria escaped from prison in Venezuela

Early this Friday, a group of nine inmates escaped from the D-215 detachment of the Bolivarian National Guard of La Pedrera, corresponding to the Libertador municipality of the state of Táchira, in Venezuela.

According to information released this Saturday by Venezuelan media, a high mobilization of soldiers is being deployed in nearby areas in search of the group, among whom is Carlos Reyes, a pediatrician who fled Chile in 2022 after being convicted of sexual abuse. against minors in Monte Patria.

The man, who until the closing of this edition remained a fugitive, had been captured by Interpol in the month of November, awaiting his extradition to the country to serve his sentence.

THE CASE

Carlos Reyes Ramos was sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexual abuse committed against two minors in Monte Patria, events that occurred between 2008 and 2015, in his capacity as a pediatrician.

His case became known when he fled the country, registering as a fugitive from justice since December 20, 2022.

In November 2023, it was reported that the subject had been captured in Venezuela, where he fled after leaving the country. First, he was reported as a kidnapping of which he had been the victim, in a confusing incident that ended with two Venezuelan police officers detained.

After confirming that he had a false identity, he was confirmed as the author convicted of two sexual crimes in Chile and ended up deprived of liberty in Detachment 2015 of La Pedrera, in the state of Tachira, where his arrest was recorded.

Since then, the families of the victims have requested that their extradition be processed, supported by authorities in the area.

However, these intentions were stopped this Saturday, when they found out what happened with the escape from the unit in which he was held.

ESCAPE AND CAPTURE

According to the Venezuelan media “Última Página”, the escape occurred shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Friday. The subjects would have managed to escape from the premises through a “gap” or hole in the ceiling.

According to the same media outlet, there would be a strong secrecy on the part of the authorities regarding the case. In fact, at the time of going to press there was still no official information about the evasion.

In the same way, El Día contacted various institutions in Chile, from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice, to the Prosecutor’s Office, however, there was no response either.

In the afternoon of the same day on Friday, “Ultima Página” reported the capture of one of the escaped inmates. This is Javier Moreno Delgado, 31 years old, prosecuted for the crime of drug trafficking. The individual was found in La Vega de Aza, corresponding to the municipality of Torbes.

Likewise, the media, which cites military sources, reported that there was reinforcement at the access points to the area where the escape originated, so it is presumed that the rest of the inmates remain somewhere in the municipality of Libertador.

SEVEN ARRESTED FOR THE CASE

This Saturday, the aforementioned Venezuelan media and other portals, such as Diario La Nación, also reported the arrest of seven people, including civilians and soldiers, for their alleged responsibility in the escape from Detachment 215 of La Pedrera.
