Vaccination has proven to be a cost-effective prevention strategy. That was seen during the pandemic. Biological products are important in our environment, for children and pregnant women; also for the general population.

The previous premise is from María Isabel Uscher, a pediatrician who graduated from the Javeriana University. She was interviewed in the educational workshop Prevention of respiratory diseases in pregnant mothers, which was carried out in Bogotá with Pfizer logistics.

“Getting vaccinated is important. Having the complete immunization schedule does not only mean vaccinating children up to five years old, it means knowing that there are biologicals that are recommended for other ages and that there are people who are more susceptible or less susceptible to certain conditions,” the pediatrician stressed.

The expert mentioned that not only people with risk factors are called to protect themselves with these drugs. You also don’t have to wait to suffer an episode of X or Y disease to later protect yourself against it.

Who should be vaccinated?

The vaccination schedule of the Expanded Immunization Plan (PAI) gives clear guidelines on who we have to vaccinate (children up to five years old) and what that immunization should be like. That is why having your vaccination card up to date is very important. It is used to know if the child is protected or not.

What cannot be forgotten in this immunization task?

It must also be understood that vaccination does not end after those five years. There are vaccines indicated for girls, against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV); for pregnant women, for adults and for the elderly.

It’s not just something for personal benefit…

Vaccination is a concept that is important, because when I am thinking about it, I don’t do it just for its own sake; I also do it for others. The perception of that risk is key. We should all know our vaccination schedule and find a way to take care of ourselves and others through that.

There is a very nice thing called herd immunity, which means that the more people around me are vaccinated, the less chance I have of getting the disease. That has to do with collective responsibility.

From the Expanded Immunization Plan (PAI)

These are the vaccines that are covered through the Expanded Immunization Plan (PAI):

  • Newborn: BCG and Hepatitis B.
  • Two months: Polio, pentavalent, rotavirus and pneumococcus.
  • Four months: Polio, pentavalent, rotavirus and pneumococcus.
  • Six months: Polio, pentavalent and seasonal influenza.
  • Seven months: Seasonal flu.
  • 12 months: Triple viral, chickenpox, hepatitis A and pneumococcus.
  • 18 months: Polio, pentavalent, yellow fever and triple viral.
  • Two to five years: Reinforcement of the triple viral for those who have the first dose.
  • Four to 13 years: Measles and rubella for those who have not received the additional dose of the vaccine.
  • Five years: Polio, DPT and chickenpox.

Keep in mind

Pregnant women should receive doses against influenza and tetanus. That of DPT (Diphtheria, whooping cough and again tetanus) and against SARS-CoV-2, which protects against covid-19. Patients of other ages should consult with their trusted doctor which vaccine would be useful for them in each case. The one that is inoculated against the coronavirus is still free.
