The idea is that workers and students have a day off to grieve.

(From Santiago, Chile) There is no doubt that a pet can become the happiness of a home, the perfect company for a lonely person, the best friend of an only child and even an element therapeutic in certain health treatments. Have a pet, learn to take care of it and receive love from it in return, does well.

According to the study “The Chile that comes”, carried out by Cadem in 2022, a 87% of Chileans assured that their pet is “a “another member of the family” and 67% said that suffer when your pet “something happens to you.” Taking into account this reality, Chilean parliamentarians from different political sectors presented a bill that grants a work permit from one day to the death of a pet.

The debate was reactivated this Tuesday in the National Congress following the death of “Duke”the television journalist’s dog José Antonio Neme, a 10-year-old French bulldog. Through his social networks, the communicator lamented his loss and made a sensitive call to the political world to “promote a bill that enshrines the right of any Chilean to live a day of mourning for the departure of your pet.”

“That by law there is a day to stop honor his memory and to be able to experience the pain intimately,” added the communicator.

In this context, the socialist deputies Daniella Cicardini and Daniel Manouchehrialong with his peers Pamela Jiles (IND) and Diego Schalper (RN) presented the project called “Duke Law”which will allow establishing a special work permit and a leave of absence for one day of classes for students, in the event of the death of a pet.

“When anyone’s pet dies it is a tremendous pain for the soul and what we are doing today is taking care of the pain of people when they lose their pet, providing them with a day of work leave for that grief and for the students, for the children “They are the ones who suffer the most with the loss of their pet, the possibility of having a day of justified absence in schools,” said Manouchehri, according to a note from Emol.

Likewise, Cicardini indicated that this project “recognizes that in each of the homes in Chile, the pet is part of the family and that is why we believe that when spaces exist today, respect, when a loved one dies, to experience grief Correspondingly, when a pet dies, that caregiver also has the same right to live that life. emotional impactto live that duel.”

He clarified that “we believe that when a pet or companion animal dies, it is like lose a brother or a child and that is why it is necessary to have space and time to live that grief and also have the respect that corresponds.”

The ‘heart’ of the initiative stipulates that people will be able to have a day of mourning for the death of a pet.

Operationally, the owners will have to register their animals in the National Pet Registry. In addition, a modification must be made to the Labor Code and the General Education Law.

It should be noted that in July 2022, a group of senators presented a project with similar characteristics, which is currently ‘sleep’ in parliament.

This particular one seeks to modify the Labor Code, to establish a work permit in the event of the death of a pet or companion animal.

The initiative was from senators Karim Bianchi, Francisco Chahuán, Sebastián Keitel and senators Paulina Núñez and Claudia Pascual.
