New Spanish presence at the Cannes Festival, although this time it will be from the jury of the Official Section of this 77th edition. Juan Antonio Bayona will close his triumphant year at the international level by being one of the members who will choose the Palme d’Or to replace Anatomy of a fall. Until now it was only known that the president would be Greta Gerwig, director of Barbie.
Cannes has announced one of its latest bullets, a jury that, in addition to Gerwig and Bayona, will include the Turkish screenwriter Ebru Ceylan, the actresses Lily Gladstone and Eva Green, the filmmaker Nadine Labaki, the actors Pierfrancisco Favino and Omar Sy, and the Japanese director and Palme d’Or winner, Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu.
They will have to choose who wins the most prestigious auteur cinema award from a selection where there are no Spanish filmmakers and there are only four women (Andre Arnold, with bird; Coralie Fargeat, with The substance; Payal Kapadia, with All we imagine as light; and Agathe Riedinger, with Diamond brut). As always, many established filmmakers will try to win the award, among them the long-awaited return of Francis Ford Coppola stands out, with Megalopolis; Paolo Sorrentino, David Cronenberg or Yorgos Lanthimos.
It will be the culmination of Bayonne’s great season, which began by presenting The Snow Society as the closing of the Venice festival before sweeping the Goya awards, where it won 13 statuettes; and being nominated for the Oscar for Best International Film -in addition to best makeup and hair-styling-. As if that were not enough, it recently won six Platinum awards for Ibero-American cinema.
