The prologue of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’, the fall of Sméagol

There was a time when Gollum was not a very different creature from Frodo, Sam, Merry or Pippin. A halfling, a Hobbit like any other. The prologue of ‘The Return of the King’ It starts with Sméagol and his cousin Déagol fishing peacefully. Suddenly, what looks like a gigantic fish takes the bait and Déagol falls into the water. As he dives and scans the bottom, he discovers a golden glow, which turns out to be the One Ring.

The artifact forged by Sauron, which has its own consciousness, immediately gets into the minds of the two Hobbits. Sméagol asks his cousin to give him the ring, but he flatly refuses. Faced with this refusal, the Hobbit loses his head and a struggle ensues: Sméagol’s hands surround Déagol’s neck and apply firm pressure, which takes his breath away. The halfling kicks, but the breath does not return to his lungs. In a few seconds, Sméagol murders his familiar and succumbs to Sauron’s weapon. My tessssorooo…

Expelled and exiled, Sméagol survives as best he can. His life is artificially extended by the influence of the One Ring, so over the years, his physique begins to deteriorate, turn gray, and lose teeth and hair. His face becomes deformed, his eyes stop being those of a Hobbit and they become bulging on his face., as if they had come out of their sockets. She no longer walks, she slides across the floor using her legs and arms. The clothes, rags that barely cover the private parts, fall apart into shreds. Gollum surrenders to the ring, a dependence from which he will never be free.
