Uber implements new tool to control inappropriate names on driver accounts

With the aim of improving the security and transparency of its users and drivers in Colombia, Uber has activated a new identity function. This tool is designed to ensure that drivers use their real names instead of pseudonyms or nicknames.

In a press release Manuela Bedoya, safety communications manager for the Andean region, the Caribbean and Central America of Uber, assured that “With this function, “Our goal is for users to register with their real name, contributing to a safer and more respectful community.”

This is because the company has detected numerous registration attempts with fictitious or inappropriate names, such as superheroes like “Superman” or nicknames like “Firulais.”

Uber will review the names used in the application, thus reducing the use of false identities. Names based on fictional characters or that are offensive will be subject to review and possible sanctions. In the coming days, the platform will enable a specific tab so that users can report names that do not correspond to the driver’s real identity.

A lawsuit from Cotech (Free Taxis) made Uber make the decision to no longer operate in the country.

“This functionality seeks to respond to a specific concern of the app’s users, since it is necessary that all people register with their real name in the application and thus provide a much safer experience”, Bedoya explained.

How to change the name on the account?

First, you must open the app and access the drop-down menu in the upper right corner. Then, you must click on “Settings” and select the area where your name, phone number and email are located. By choosing “Edit Account”, they will be able to modify the “Name” section with the correct information.

Once these steps are completed, the request will be evaluated by Uber’s technical committee, who will verify the authenticity of the information. If the request is denied, the account will be suspended until the necessary correction is made. This new policy not only seeks to improve safety, but also strengthen user trust in the platform, ensuring that each driver is who they say they are.
