The XVIII International Tango Festival 2024 will begin on Sunday, June 23 and will end on Sunday, June 30. During these eight days, more than forty activities and shows will be offered to Medellin residents and visitors with free admission.

The Medellín Culture Secretariat has reported that a little more than a thousand national and international artists will participate in the programming of this edition of the Festival. Among them, maestro Víctor Lavallén, a legendary bandoneon player from the golden age of tango, will arrive from Argentina as a special guest. Lavallén will perform with his orchestra during the gala night, on Monday, June 24 at 7:30 pm at the Teatro Metropolitano, coinciding with the 89th anniversary of the death of Carlos Gardel.

On this occasion, a special tribute will be paid to the Tango Orchestra of the Medellín Music Network, which is celebrating its 15 years. The main stages of the activities will be the Pablo Tobón Uribe Theater, Plaza Gardel and the Metropolitan Theater. In addition, the Parque de los Deseos and the Network of Houses of Culture will once again host the festival, with the aim of bringing tango and cultural offerings closer to the neighborhoods.

The death of Carlos Gardel left a mark in the history of Medellín. For this reason, every June 24, the city’s tango players commemorate another anniversary of the death of Zorzal Criollo. This year the Tango Festival has scheduled a special concert for that date at the Metropolitan Theater at seven thirty at night.

“This is a work inspired by small, but important social events: romanticism, drama and loneliness,” Jorge Amarante told EL COLOMBIANO about this work that fuses classical ballet with tango. After its premiere, the play will be presented on Wednesday, June 26 at nine at night at the Pablo Tobón Uribe Theater.

The Tango Orchestra of the Medellín Music School Network celebrates fifteen years of cultural and artistic work. With the intention of celebrating that anniversary, he has decided to open the doors of his rehearsal on Friday, June 28 at ten in the morning at the Palacio de Bellas Artes.

Milonga for the city

In recent years, the number of people who dance tango in social and non-artistic settings in Medellín has grown. This has led to milongas spreading throughout the city. With this in mind, the Festival organizers have organized a massive milonga in the Parque de los Deseos, which will begin at seven and go until ten at night on Friday, June 28.
