Starting next July 7th, Colombia will take a significant step in the fight against plastic pollution by banning six types of plastics single use only. This measure, based on Law 2232 of 2022, seeks to reduce the production and consumption of disposable plastic products, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives for the planet.

Law 2232 of 2022 establishes provisions for the gradual replacement of single-use plastics with sustainable alternatives, promoting the closing of cycles and the implementation of complementary measures. Plastics producing companies will have to adapt, while consumers will have to change their habits to contribute to caring for the environment.

Plastics banned from July 7

Starting Sunday, July 7, Six types of single-use plastics cannot be sold in Colombiaplacing the country at the forefront of sustainability in the region. These are:

  • Point of payment plastic bags: Used to pack, load or transport packages and merchandise, except those that are reusable or for industrial use, such as bags in store and supermarket checkouts.
  • Rolls of empty bags in commercial surfaces: Used to pack, load or transport packages and merchandise or carry food in bulk, except raw animal products, such as bags in fruit and vegetable aisles.
  • Bags for packing newspapers, magazines, advertising and invoices: Also used in laundries to pack washed clothes.
  • Plastic supports for inflation pumps.
  • Plastic holders for cotton swabs or flexible cotton-tipped swabs.
  • Drink stirrers and straws.

Gradual bans until 2032

The ban doesn’t stop there. The law specifies that eight other plastic products single-use products will be gradually banned over the next eight years. These include:

  • Plates, trays, knives, forks, spoons, glasses and eating gloves.
  • Containers or packaging for non-prepackaged liquids, for immediate consumption, for takeaway or for home delivery.
  • Confetti, tablecloths and streamers.
  • Sheets for serving, packaging, wrapping or separating food for immediate consumption, take-out or home delivery.
  • Single-use dental floss handles or dental floss holders.
  • Packaging for the marketing of fresh fruits, vegetables, tubers, aromatic herbs, vegetables and mushrooms.
  • Stickers, labels or any badge that is attached to vegetables.
  • Containers to contain or carry non-prepackaged foods, for immediate consumption, used for take-out or home delivery

The implementation of this regulation is a crucial step towards reducing plastic pollution in Colombia. Companies will have to innovate in the creation of eco-friendly alternatives, and consumers will have to adapt their purchasing habits to support this transition. This measure not only seeks to protect the environment, but also to educate the population about the importance of responsible and sustainable consumption.
