The fever for Spanish ‘true crimes’ is living its best moment, and this has been demonstrated by the millions of viewers who have seen The body on fire, The Asunta Case either The King of Cachopo in recent times, among many others. If you are one of those who make your eyes twinkle every time you read those two words in English, which are characterized by investigation and reconstruction of real crimesthis is for you.

This is not the first time that the story of Hildegart Rodríguez has been brought to the big screen, a girl who was destined to be someone important, but did not have the time. Fernando Fernan Gomez (The language of butterflies, The journey to nowhere) was the one who opened the season in 1977, with My daughter Hildegartbut there were also more adaptations of his story in subsequent decades, such as the short film The Red Virgin (2011) starring Maribel Verdú and Ivana Baquero.

Precisely, this last title, translated into Spanish, is the one that will carry the new movie that will see the light in a few months: The red virginthe same name that Fernando Arrabal chose for his novel published in 1987. On this occasion, the film is in charge of the production and distribution company Elastica Films (Alcarras, The girls are fine) and directed by Paula Ortizthe Zaragoza native who debuted with the film From your window to mine (2011) and has the recent Teresa (2023) as his latest work, with Blanca Portillo and Greta Fernández.

Trailer, synopsis and release date of The red virgin

The red virgin It is based on a true story that moved the society of its time, in Spain in the 1930s, just before the Civil War broke out. One of the protagonists is Aurora Rodríguez Carballeira (Nawja Nimri)a doctrinaire feminist who decides to get pregnant with a single purpose: to conceive a daughter and educate her to have an important role in society, especially in the history of feminist thought and movement. So it was.

Hildegart Rodríguez (Alba Planas) She became the youngest lawyer in our country, her publications were admired by personalities such as HG Wells, Ortega y Gasset or Gregorio Marañón, she marked the path on female sexuality at a European level and, ultimately, she was one of the most brilliant minds of the 30s in Spain. However, Aurora’s great project is threatened when her daughter turns 18 and meets Abel Vilella (Patrick Criado)who teaches him what true freedom is.

When Hildegart begins to explore a new emotional world and decides to fly from the nest, Aurora does everything possible to prevent her daughter from leaving.until the young woman’s promising career came to an end on the night of June 9, 1933, when her mother murders her. As you can see, the reason for this decision is very clear in the 30 seconds of the trailer, where Aurora says that “Project Hildegart had failed, there was no point in continuing with it”.
