Stiff person syndrome

Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) is a disease neurological that affects the central nervous system and that produces progressive muscle rigidity, muscle spasms and great sensitivity to external stimuli (such as noise and touch) that worsen contractions.

According to the United States National Institute of Health, some symptoms can begin between the ages of 30 and 60:

  • Abnormal postures, such as hunching over.
  • Episodes of muscle stiffness and spasms that occur due to increased sensitivity to noise, touch, and as a startle response.
  • Falls due to muscle spasms and stiffness when people with the disease are walking or standing.
  • Cerebral palsy.
  • Epilepsy.

On the other hand, they point out that this syndrome has no cure, however, treatment (such as medications and physical therapy) can work to improve some symptoms of the disease.

Céline Dion shared intimate images

One of the most shocking scenes in the documentary is when Céline has a seizure for several minutes while being treated by her sports medicine therapist, Terrill Lobo.

“It was very disturbing. Very disturbing. I know it’s hard for some viewers, it was hard for me too. But I will tell you that Céline felt validated by seeing herself like this, and thought it would help her if other people could understand what the disease is like.” Wolf explained.

According to them, the incident occurred just a few minutes after a recording session. “Part of the disease is that when you go into a contraction, sometimes the signal to release it is not understood, so it ends up staying in a contracted position”says the expert.

After the shocking episode, the 56-year-old singer talks about her frustration and shame at losing control of her body. “I don’t know how to express it, it’s like… you know? Not having control of yourself.”

Despite how difficult the situation has been for the singer, she maintains her determination, “If I can’t run, I will walk. If I can’t walk, I will crawl. But I won’t stop.”
