The competition began after 12 noon this Monday on the Stephen James Bridge with the competitors who participated in the 1800 meter and 5000 meter events. Then, from the Hendre Bridge, the 3500 meter competition got underway. Around 120 swimmers from different parts of the country participated..

César Fondacaro and Jésica Conde were left with the main test of the first date of the Open Water championship that took place with great success, this Monday, in the waters of the Chubut River. The race was divided into three distances joining the Stephen James, Hendre and Mafía bridges in the city of Trelew. This swimming competition was accompanied by the Trelew Events Bureau of Entretur.
For their part, Elías Zárate and Angelina Ríos were the winners of the 3500 meter test, while Joaquín Suquia and Macarena Sepúlveda were the ones who won the 1800 meter competition.
Fabián Maldonado, organizer of the competition, at the end of the event, expressed: “The truth is that we doubled our expectations because last year we had 60 swimmers and this year almost 120, coming from different places. The river is high, with a water temperature of 14 degrees, with a lot of current, which made the test very quick.”
In this sense, he highlighted: “We did an arduous cleaning task for two weeks and it paid off, because the swimmers were able to enjoy a competition in a clean river.”
The winner of the main 5000 meter event, César Fondacaro, referred to the development of the competition: “It is the first time I have run this event. I joined this experience on the river for the first time. I do toilet polo with the rest of the team and we keep in rhythm, that’s why we all arrive practically together. The water was very cold, but once we started swimming we forgot a little. A lot of water flow in the river and we all arrived together. “I liked the experience and we will continue participating in the next dates.”
For her part, the winner among the Ladies was Jésica Conde, she stated: “The truth is that it is the second time I have done it. The water is very cold, but a beautiful experience. I really like swimming, since beyond dedicating myself to triathlon, the water part is what I like the most. It’s crazy to have won the test. I did not expect it. The flow and current of the river helps a lot. “I’m going to try to continue participating in the other dates.”
